Gymnastics is fun and fulfilling
at all levels. Whether you just did a
forward roll for the first time, you’re nervous and on the way to your first
competition, or you’re training to be best at the state meet. Girls
gymnastics develops fantastic strength, coordination, agility and to top it off
grace within the young female athlete.
Competitive gymnastics does all of this and more. Through the competitions and practices the
girls earn pride and a large sense of accomplishment from their efforts. The competitive gymnast trains year round to
keep their bodies strong enough a quick enough for the sport of
gymnastics. Through these practices the
girls become very close to their teammates and learn a lot about team work and
team unity. Being a competitive
gymnastics teaches a lot about pushing yourself; setting goals, setting a path
to your goals and doing what it takes to follow that path and achieve their
goals. Many upper level gymnasts and
their parents have would agree that gymnastics helps even at school. The athlete may be in the gym a lot but
gymnastics teaches the athlete to become much better organized with their
time. The girls that take on
competitive gymnastics (no matter how long their journey lasts) will know about
poise, the ability to control their fears, and knowledge that they can
accomplish anything in life. After all
if they can learn the determination to flip their bodies upside down and land
feet first on a four inch beam then they can do anything.
The Women’s team competes four
different disciplines of gymnastics: (In Olympic Order)
- Vault – The Vault is a power exercise using a spring board
to propel the gymnasts up and over the vaulting table at which time the gymnast
will perform one of many different vaults.
- Uneven Bars - The Uneven Bars are all about circling,
swinging and the ability to hit the handstand positions. The more advanced athletes will swing from
bar to bar doing release moves – letting go of the bar, performing a move in the
air, then catching the bar.
- Balance Beam – The Balance Beam is 16ft 3in long and only 4
inches wide, which makes for a fairly difficult piece of equipment to defy
gravity and stay on. The gymnasts’ beam
routine consists of dance elements and acro or flipping elements.
- Floor Exercise- The Floor exercise takes place on a 40ft x
40ft padded, carpeted and spring loaded floor where the gymnasts performs
tumbling, acrobatic and dance skills in their routine. For the girls’ the floor exercise
demonstrates power, flexibility and grace.
